More flood devastation looming large as NHPC completes 80% work

Pratidin Bureau

Almost 80% of the lower  Subansiri hydro project has been completed by NHPC. Keeping the protesters and the state people in darkness National Hydro Power Corporation (NHPC)  has been continuing works at lower Subansiri project.

Not following the instruction of the National Green Tribunal (NGT) on October 2017 NHPC continues the construction work. In May, the NGT reserved its order on whether the committee for the 2,000 megawatt (Mw) project in Arunachal Pradesh, planned 15 years earlier, should continue. As Assam is under constant turmoil with the Citizenship Amendment Bill and NRC, NHPC is seen  taking  advantage of the situation.

The central representative team of Asom Jatiyatabadi Yuba Chatra Parishad (AJYCP) and Majuli , Dhemaji and Lakhimpur's district unit has  expressed shock after inspecting the dam.It is to be mentioned that there has been a severe landslide at the top of the dam at Gerukamukh.

The cracks of the dam are sealed just by using layers of cement. The construction  of the power house along with  9 diversion tunnel are almost complete.

As the power house lies in Arunachal Pradesh no one from Assam has been able to inspect it without inner line permit. At the time when the mega dams in Kerala created havoc and claimed lives of many ,NHPC have not  followed the guidelines and  continues the construction works of the mega dams.
