Hooch tragedy: Govt. to look after children who lost parents

Pratidin Bureau

Chairing a high level meeting in the aftermath of Assam hooch tragedy, Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal on Monday decided to extend government help for looking after all children who lost their parent or parents in the incident. The children will be looked after by the government under Juvenile Justice Act.

Chief Minister Sonowal also asked State Chief Secretary Alak Kumar to ban 'Laligur' (molasses) in the State. CM asked the Chief Secretary to direct all Deputy Commissioners to ensure ban on 'Laligur' in all the districts.

The ban has been necessitated as 'Laligur' is widely used to prepare 'sulai' an intoxicating drink. The CM also directed the Chief Secretary to direct the Deputy Commissioners to generate awareness in all the tea gardens and their periphery areas by conducting awareness meetings so that people can be made aware of the evils of consuming sulai.
