GU student held for circulation of fake news

A Gauhati University student has been arrested on Monday evening from Sivasagar for allegedly impersonating the image of Assam's Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal and circulating the disinformation of a forged appeal by the CM on social media.

The accused 23-year-old Dipjyoti Gogoi, a post-graduate student of Communication and Journalism of the university has been handed over to Guwahati police and is now in judicial custody for fourteen days.

Gogoi has been arrested under the registered complaint of 11/20 by the Guwahati crime branch. Gogoi has been booked under 419, 420, 34 section of Indian Penal Code and section 66 A of Information and Technology Act for creation and circulation of fraudulent news.
