Dry monsoon spell in Northeast region while South India drowns

While South India and Kerala reels under catastrophic flood due to incessant rain from the past 10 days, the northeastern part of the country is rather having a dry monsoon season this year with soaring temperatures.

According to the Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC), the region is going through a drier spell in comparison to same time last year. Assam has witnessed devastating floods due to incessant rains for years but has seen a 30 percent deficit in monsoon rainfall this year.

Assam has received 759.3 mm rainfall against a normal of 1088.5 mm, according to a RMC data.

Other northeast states are also experiencing a major downfall in rainfall this year. Manipur has seen a 66 percent decline in rainfall this year while the Nagaland, Tripura and Mizoram have witnessed 28 per cent, 23 per cent and 10 per cent deficit rainfall respectively this year.

Meghalaya, home to the two wettest places on earth, has received 46 percent lesser rains this year surprisingly.
