Delhi Riots Case: Devangana Kalita, Natasha Narwal, Asif Iqbal Tanha Released From Prison

Pratidin Bureau

Two days after the Delhi High Court granted them bail, Pinjra Tod activists Devangana Kalita and Natasha Narwal and Jamia Millia Islamia student Asif Iqbal Tanha were finally released out of Tihar Jail on Thursday evening.

Director General (Delhi Prisons) Sandeep Goel confirmed to news agency PTI that Kalita and Narwal walked out of jail around 7 pm and Tanha around 7.30 pm.

The student activists were arrested in May last year under the stringent Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA) in connection to the Delhi Riots triggered by Anti-CAA protests.

As per reports, the student activists had moved the court seeking their immediate release and alleged that the police were deliberately delaying their release even though they had been granted bail by the Delhi High Court.

The Karkardooma court heard the matter on Thursday and Additional Sessions Judge Ravinder Bedi told lawyers that the court had passed the order at 11 am.

Meanwhile, Delhi Police has challenged the bail order in a special leave petition filed before the Supreme Court. The top bench on Friday will hear the appeal.
