Congress MP Sushmita Dev claims Bengalis being beaten up in Assam-Meghalaya border post NRC draft

Pratidin Bureau

Following the publication of final National Register of Citizen (NRC) draft, Bengali speaking people are being scrutinized and beaten up along the Assam-Meghalaya border, claimed Congress MP from Assam Sushmita Dev in the Lok Sabha today.

The MP alleged that Bengalis, who are travelling from Assam to and through Meghalaya, are being targeted and beaten up after a number of check posts have been post up in the neighboring state to keep a check on infiltration by illegal immigrants.

Sushmita Dev tried to create a scene in Lok Sabha by entering the Well and making the allegations. She also alleged that Home Minister Rajnath Singh and BJP President Amit Shah were only giving lectures but have failed to give security to many people.

"You people are irresponsible. This is not fair. Rajnath Singh and Amit Shah are giving only lectures, but doing nothing," she claimed.

"Bengalis are being beaten up along Assam-Meghalaya border. We want security for the 40 lakh people who were excluded from the NRC. What is the government doing? People are scared. Who will give them security?" Dev asked.

However, Speaker Sumitra Mahajan did not pay much heed to Dev's plea and said "every day, you cannot do this. Go to your seat".
