Congress MLA Rupjyoti Kurmi Resigns, Likely to Join BJP

Pratidin Bureau

Four-time Congress MLA Rupjyoti Kurmi on Friday tendered his resignation from the party and is likely to join the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) soon. He has also resigned from his membership in the Assam Legislative Assembly. Kurmi tendered his resignation letter to Assam Assembly Speaker Biswajit Daimary.

Rupjyoti Kurmi, who was an MLA of Mariani constituency said he's leaving the Congress because the party leadership ignores the voice of young leaders. He also targeted party leader Rahul Gandhi.

Rupjyoti Kurmi while quoted by news agency ANI said, "The Congress isn't listening to its young leaders. Therefore, the party's situation is worsening in all states. I'll meet the assembly speaker and tender my resignation."

"Rahul Gandhi is unable to shoulder leadership. If he's at the helm, the party won't move forward," Rupjyoti Kurmi said while attacking the Congress

After tendering his resignation, Rupjyoti Kurmi also raised questions about the Congress' alliance with the All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) and termed it a "mistake".

"Guwahati leaders give priority to elderly leaders only. We'd told them the Congress has a good chance of coming to power this time and we shouldn't forge an alliance with the AIUDF as it would be a mistake. It indeed was."

The Congress and the AIUDF had announced a pre-poll alliance for the Assam assembly election which took place in April this year.
