CM Sarma Pays Tribute To Assam’s First CM Gopinath Bordoloi

Assam Chief Minister Dr.Himanta Biswa Sarma on Sunday paid tribute to the state's first chief minister Ratna Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi on his 131st birth anniversary.

The 15th Chief Minister of the state, Dr. Sarma said that the first Chief Minister's contributions towards the state will be "cherished forever".

"My humble tribute to Assam's 1st Chief Minister Bharat Ratna Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi on his 131st birth anniversary. His contributions towards preserving the culture, identity and spirit of Assam, and ensuring her unity, are legendary, and shall be cherished forever," Dr. Sarma tweeted.

Gopinath Bordoloi took oath as the state's first Chief Minister in 1938.

As per reports, Gopinath Bordoloi's political career started when he joined the Indian National Congress as a volunteer in 1921. He actively participated in the fight for independence. He was arrested in 1922 due to active participation in the Non-co-operation movement and was put in jail for a year.

Gopinath Bordoloi was born on 6 June 1890 at Raha in Nagaon district.

He was conferred upon with the Bharat Ratna posthumously in 1999.
