Pratidin Bureau

The Food Safety Department launched an operation in Guwahati's Fancy Bazar in the morning today.

The department raided the fruit market which brought shocking results into light. The city's markets have been filled with contaminated fruits which are assured to be nutritious to the customers.

During the operation, the department seized cartons of mangoes which have been ripened by the use of carbide. This substance is injected in the mangoes which makes unripe fruits fully consumable within a period of 13-14 hours.

One of the department's officer said, "These fruits are injected overnight and by the morning it is ready to hit the markets. It is mostly during Ramzan that the demand for fruits is the highest. Therefore, these sellers try to profit as much as possible."

According to reports, these mangoes had been taken to Boragaon dumping ground to destroy them for good.
