CAB, If voted to power: BJP

Pratidin Bureau

A confidant BJP has promised to pass the Citizenship Amendment Bill if voted to power in the coming Lok Sabha Elections.

Releasing its manifesto- Sankalp Patra, for the LS polls, Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh said that Citizenship Amendment Bill will be passed in the next five years.

Belying the popular expectations that the BJP will go slow on CAB at least till April 11, when the first phase voting will take place in Assam, the BJP today bluntly said that CAB was on.

In the first phase poll, five Lok Sabha constituencies, (Lakhimpur, Dibrugarh, Koliabor, Jorhat, Tezpur) will go to the poll and all the constituencies are CAB sensitive.

However the BJP state unit feel that the people of Assam dumped the CAB issue and moved on. "Had CAB been issue, we would not have got such groundswell of support. It is a dead issue provoked by a partisan media and the left wing intellectual class of Assam," said BJP state unit President Ranjeet Dass, hailing the manifesto.

With AGP already licking the boot of the BJP for its own survival, shoving inside the CAB, the BJP wants to bulldoze CAB issue with their massive well oiled band wagon.

Enlisting the highlights of the BJP manifesto, the Union Home Minister said that the Uniform Civil Code and Citizenship Amendment Bill will be passed in the next five years.

"Will check infiltration. Citizenship Amendment Bill – we will pass in parliament and implement it," said Rajnath Singh.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi and party President Amit Shah are present at the launch event.

As usual back in Assam, the usual chorus of strong words from AASU to KMSS and a section of AGP and Congress followed but the BJP felt that on the ground there were no takers.

"Even now AGP stick to the BJP, the people of Assam must take up the matter in their own hand. It is now or never" said the Congress state president Ripun Bora.
