BJP general secretary-cum-in-charge of the North-East region Ram Madhav clearly hinted that BJP to continue alliance with AGP.
After the panchayat results, BJP state president Ranjit Kumar Das submitted detailed report to party national president Amit Shah during office bearers meeting in New Delhi. In the report, Assam BJP described how their ally AGP worked against the saffron party.
It may be mentioned that BJP has been facing attack from AGP leaders over the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2016. There was speculation that BJP may break the alliance after the panchayat polls, however Ram Madhav said alliances will continue.
"Assam BJP has taken resolution supporting the bill." he added.
Ahead of panchayat election, Asom Gana Parishad took out various rally against the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, giving a clear ultimatum that it would break the alliance if the draft legislation is passed. The party also threatened to pull out if Citizenship Bill isn't scrapped.
The regional party leaders believed that the citizenship Bill would lead to an influx of Bangladeshi Hindus.
