Baghjan Fire: Compensation Offered To More Than 10 Victims

Pratidin Bureau

In what appears to be a knee-jerk response to the stiff protests in Baghjan on Saturday over the suicide of one Sukhleshwar Neog in connection to the alleged flippant outlook of Oil India Limited (OIL), the organization compensated 11 victims of the Baghjan fire yesterday.

All those 11 persons, whose houses completely devoured by the fire, were offered a compensation of Rupees 20 lakhs each. 5 more victims, as per sources, have been duly compensated. Moreover, the rest of the final compensation will be paid as per the court order.

The names of the 11 beneficiaries are Papul Chutia, Ritu Moran, Horuful Pangging, Deep Saikia, Amal Saikia, Bikash Saikia, Sahadev Moran, Hemanto Moran , Lakhindra Moran, Munu Mura and Labanya Saikia.

It is mention worthy that the suicide of Neog yesterday, apart from sparking a huge row, had also led to a blockade by the locals which halted the well capping operations underway in Baghjan.

Neog is believed to have taken the extreme step due to not getting compensated by OIL for his loss to the inferno. The deceased reportedly had a mental breakdown, which led him to consume poison.
