Assam TMC Chief quits party in protest against Mamata’s opposition to NRC draft

Pratidin Bureau

The Chief of Assam unit Trinamool Congress (TMC), Dipen Pathak has quit the party on Thursday in protest against Mamata Banerjee's opposition to Assam NRC (National Register of Citizen) final draft.

The TMC Assam unit chief has resigned from the party on the day when an eight members (Six MPs, one West Bengal minister and a party functionary) team came to Assam.

Pathak, TMC's first MLA in Assam Legislative Assembly from 2011 to 2016 had led the party from grass root level. "I have decided to quit TMC in protest against Mamata Banerjee's opposition to Assam NRC final draft. Her comments on Assam NRC are disturbing. I can no longer stay in TMC", said Pathak.

He alleged that despite repeated request to TMC leaderships to raise Assam's flood problem issue at national level, Mamata and her team paid no attention to Assam unit's request. "Now Mamata Banerjee has sent a team of MPs to Silchar to assess Assam situation after NRC final draft. The party has no interest for the well-being of Assam. TMC's stand on Assam NRC draft is related with election", alleged Pathak.

The outgoing TMC Assam unit chief added that the party leadership had not discussed anything with him over party delegation's visit to Assam's Silchar town. "I can't allow any political force to create disturbance in Assam. Till now Assam is peaceful but TMC leaderships wanted to create trouble here such that it gets some political mileage by emotionally blackmailing common people", added Pathak.
