The government of Assam has no control over the soaring prices of onion as the prices of onion continue to remain high in the range of Rs 70-80/kg in the retail markets of the state despite government measures.

Trade data showed retail onion prices ruling in the range of Rs 70-80 per kg in most parts of the country, depending on quality and region.

Food and Civil Supplies Minister Phani Bhushan Choudhury on Wednesday promised relief from the eye-watering price of onion in the state.

Choudhury said that they would start selling onion from Thursday at Rs. 66/- per kilogram.

"We will monitor the process thoroughly. Action will be taken against those found to be involved in black marketing of the vegetable", the Minister said.

Minister of Food Civil Supplies & Consumer Affairs Department Phani Bhusan Choudhury held a meeting with the delegation of Chamber of commerce on Wednesday. According to the Chamber of commerce, the prices of onion may remain the same till January, next year.

The prices of onion continue to remain high due to supply disruption in the wake of heavy rains and floods in the main growing states like Maharasthra and Karnataka.
