Assam: Detention Centres Renamed As ‘Transit Camps’

Detention centres in Assam for foreigners and those declared such by specific tribunals have been renamed as 'transit camps', an official notification stated.

"The nomenclature of detention centre is changed to 'Transit Camp' for detention purpose" in partial modification of a June 2009 notification, the notification issued by by Niraj Verma, Principal Secretary of the State's Home and Political Department stated.

Currently, there are six detention centres in Assam – Dibrugarh, Goalpara, Jorhat, Kokrajhar, Silchar and Tezpur.

Another such centre is under construction in Goalpara's Agia region.

According to official data,  2,551 declared foreigners were sent to the detention camps from December 29, 2009 to June 30, 2021.

It also revealed that 29 such foreigners died during their detention since 2009, while many were granted bail.
