Assam celebrates ‘Guru Jayanti’

Today marks the 570th birth anniversary of Mahapurush Srimanta Sankardeva. Assam's 'Sattra' and 'Namghar' are echoing with 'Harinam', 'Thionam' and 'Dihanam'.

Sattras have started the day with 'Borgeet' and 'Gayan-Bayan' filling the atmosphere sonorously.

Sankardeva's birthplace Batadrava has come alive to celebrate this pious occasion. Along with Majuli's 35 Sattras, more than three hundred Sattras of the state are celebrating the Mahapurush's birth anniversary.

It may be mentioned that in 20 places people have come together to mark this day collectively. Srimanta Sankardeva Sangha has also organised a two-day event in Majuli's Natun Bazar to celebrate 'Guru Jayanti'.

The Mising tribe has also come forward to celebrate this auspicious occasion in Borpomua and Ujoni Borpomua Sarvodaya Sangha in Majuli.
