Assam | Anti-Dam faction May Go for ‘Protest’

Pratidin Bureau

Advocate Tularam Gogoi on Tuesday exhorted the people to come out en masse to protest against the proposed dam projects in the state.

The works of the National Hydroelectric Power Corporation (NHPC)'s biggest hydroelectric projects at the Lower Subansiri will be resumed by the state government after the National Green Tribunal (NGT) cancelled the appeals stopping the work.

The NHPC Limited on Friday said that work for the stalled 2000 MW Lower Subansiri hydro power project at Gerukamukh along the Arunachal Pradesh-Assam border would resume soon.

"All materials, engineers, field staff are already there and once the water level recedes, the work for the dam will be resumed," NHPC Ltd CMD Balraj Joshi told reporters in New Delhi.

The work for the Lower Subansiri project had been halted for last several years following agitation raised against the dam by several organisations including the Assam Public Works (APW), All Assam Students Union (AASU), Krishak Mukti sangram Samiti (KMSS), Asom Jatiyatabadi Yuva Chatra Parishad (AJYCP) and various non-political groups.
