ABSU leaders disagree on ST status issue

Pratidin Bureau

Amid the deliberations over ST status issue, ABSU President Promod Boro on Wednesday opposed the Govt's plan related to grant of tribal status to six communities of Assam (Chutiya, Matak, Moran, Koch Rajbongshi, Tai Ahom and Adivasi)

Addressing a press conference, Boro said that "It will create community conflict between indigenous tribes of Assam. It's a wrong move of centre. It's a conspiracy to destroy the brotherhood between the tribes. I am strongly opposed the move. This will destroy the existing ST communities, we will not accept this."

As per sources, BJP will soon call a  meeting to discuss the issues and implementation of Clause-6 of the Assam Accord and issues related to grant of tribal status to six communities.

A team from Assam BJP headed by CM Sarbananda Sonowal meet Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh on January 12.

The state-representative team was accompanied by State Finance Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, Tourism Minister Chandan Brahma and BTC chief Hagrama Mohilary.

The team discussed about the current situation of Assam as Assam Tribal Sangha raised its strong objection against the Constitution (Scheduled Tribes) Order (Amendment) Bill, 2019.
