AASU slams Centre over Big Dam

TheAll Assam Students Union (AASU) on Thursday criticized Centre's perspectivetowards the Lower Subansiri Hydro Electric Project (LSHEP). AASU leaderSamujjal Kumar Bhattacharya said that the LSHEP is a major threat to the safetyof life and property of people living in downstream Assam.

"The recent waves of floods have proved that big dams are a real threat to the people of Assam," Bhattacharya said, adding, "At present, the issue of the construction of the big dam is under the trial in the Supreme Court and the National Green Tribunal. Despite such circumstances, the NHPC has been constructing the big dam violating the courts."

TheAASU adviser further slammed Narendra Modi-led Central government for itsattitude towards Assam floods. "Assam has been reeling under floods for severaldays now, but our Prime Minister did not have the time to visit the floodaffected State, nor did the Centre announced any special package for theflood-affected State," Bhattacharya said.
