Guwahati: GMC Conducts Eviction Drive At Fancy Bazar

Pratidin Bureau

A massive eviction drive was carried out at S.S Road, Fancy Bazar by Guwahati Municipal Corporation (GMC) on Thursday.

The drive was conducted in coordination with Guwahati police where a number of street vendors and hawkers were evicted as the area is designated as 'No Vending Zone' under the Street Vendors Act 2014.

According to an official release by the GMC, prior mic announcements were made but there was no response from the encroachers, hence the eviction drive was conducted.

The affected area stretches from Goenka point near Sikh Temple to MG Road near LIC Office at S.S Road, Fancy Bazar, Guwahati.

Further, GMC has also notified that it has "arranged alternative accommodation of bonafide members of S.S. Road Hawkers Association at the Mezzanine Floor of Multistoried Building of the GMC at Fancy Bazar."

"Shifting of the business from the S.S. Road to Mezzanine Floor of the GMC building at Fancy Bazar will greatly reduce the traffic congestion in that area and serve the larger public interest," it said.
