In a shocking incident, the body of a young woman was discovered dead under mysterious circumstances at her rented residence in Guwahati's Hengrabari area on Sunday.

Initial reports stated that the woman, who lived in a rented space near Amrit Udyan in the Hengrabari area of the city had been working at a nearby beauty parlour as a beautician for the past one year.

The officials of Dispur police informed that the deceased woman was originally from Assam's Dhemaji. She was identified as Anushka Saikia.

Notably, the Dispur Police were informed about the incident and soon reached the scene to recover the body. The police said that they had initiated an investigation into the matter.

It has also come to the fore that a domestic help identified as Junu Borah at the said residence was picked up by police for interrogation.

A team from the forensic department also arrived at the scene of the incident and are collecting evidence. However, it remains unclear as to whether it was a case of murder or suicide.

Speaking to the media, a police official not willing to be named said, "The incident looks mysterious. We have picked up one woman who was working at the residence as a domestic help for questioning."

Meanwhile, locals of the aforementioned area alleged that the maid-servant and the owner of the house were involved in murdering Anushka.

A section of the people claimed that the woman working as a domestic helper was having an illicit affair with the owner of the residence.

"After Anushka came to know about the affair, she informed the same to her family members in Dhemaji. This led to a conflict between the domestic help and Anushka," the locals alleged further.
